What is Scout-Led?

Scout-led is a little chaotic. Scout-led means that sometimes the details don’t get communicated as well as they might if an adult just did it. Scout-led means that a youth is doing the learning and character development that turns them into a leader.

Scout Leadership

“Scouting is a game for [scouts] under the leadership of [scouts] under the direction of [an adult].”

The foundation of scouting is that scouts develop leadership and character by being led by, and learning to lead, other scouts, with guidance from adults. Troop 782’s adult leaders aim to let the scouts lead as much as possible, to make mistakes in a safe environment and to learn from those mistakes. Of course, while having as much fun as possible.

In the chart below, the adults are in the bottom, supportive roles, letting the scouts lead.

Adult Leadership

Adults are here to ensure health and safety, and it is our job to train the scouts, trust the scouts, and then let them lead. We aim to never do what the scouts can do.

Patrol Leader’s Council (PLC)

The Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL), Patrol Leaders (PL), Assistant Patrol Leaders (APL), and additional official roles comprise the Patrol Leader’s Council (PLC). These senior scouts are in charge of planning the scouting year, and then meet usually monthly to arrange details or make adjustments to the annual plan. Elections are held every six months to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to lead.
